As we reported last week, actress and activist Cynthia Nixon is running for Governor of New York. Her announcement prompted cheers from some, boos from others, and a lot of Miranda from Sex in the City references. She also received some condemnation from openly lesbian politician Christine Quinn, who was the Speaker of the NYC Council, and later a candidate for mayor. When asked about Nixon’s running, she said, “Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.” Quinn later softened her statement, but Nixon ran with it.
“When I announced yesterday that I’m running for gov, one of Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an “unqualified lesbian.” It’s true that I never received my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, though in my defense there’s a lot of paperwork required.” ♀️

Now Nixon is selling “Unqualified Lesbian” buttons to support her campaign, for contributions starting at $5.
She said in a later tweet that she’s currently working on getting t-shirts too.
