How to throw a watch party for the queer holiday rom-com “Season of Love”

(A guest post by Season of Love writer, Kat Trammell)

Dearest Readers,

You are cordially invited to the Season of Love Watch Party because you:

  1. Need a little holiday joy in your life after spending the week with Grandpa Joe and his affinity for Fox News,
  2. Are an Earper with no chill,
  3. Love Hallmark Christmas movies but always wished they were merry and gay like you, or
  4. All of the above.

I’m happy to inform you that this year, FINALLY, at 1:00 pm EST on December 1st, your holiday wishes are coming true. So put on your ugliest Christmas sweater, and get ready to celebrate the release Season of Love with these simple party tips.

Decor and Ambience

There’s no room for debate here — NOW is the time to decorate. We know this might mean you have to dig through your attic or storage closet a bit earlier than you intended, but it’ll be worth it.  And if you don’t have holiday decorations, then make like Iris and hang 30 (or 10) paper snowflakes throughout your home. Not sure how? There’s an Instructable for that!

For pre-watch-party jams, don’t miss out on the official Season of Love soundtrack available now from CD BabyiTunes and Google Play

Add a little dancing, singing Christmas doll to the mix, and you’ve got a perfect Season of Love viewing space.

Festive Beverages

Need some ideas for your holiday toasts? We’ve got you covered, and we’ve got a little something for everyone at your Season of Love watch party.

Boozy: The Dirty Snowflake

This is our take on a forgotten classic: The “Lion’s Tail” cocktail. This is a festive spin on the classic whiskey sour. We’ve got plenty of bourbon, a bit of lime, a dash of bitters, a touch of sweetness, and a touch of spice through the secret ingredient…St. Elizabeth’s Allspice Dram, an all-spice infused rum that will take your cocktail game to a whole new level this holiday season. Garnish this cocktail with a few Milk Duds in honor of Iris. Feeling adventurous? Throw in an option egg white for some frothy fun!

Non-Boozy: Lady Kisses

We want to ensure all of your guests, including the non-drinking sorts, have a fun drink in hand for your watch party. You can make a big batch of this as a punch for your guests ahead of time. And talk about hitting the easy button —this recipe calls for only three ingredients: orange juice, cranberry juice and ginger ale! Garnish with some cranberries because you’re classy like that.

Bonus Non-Boozy: Veggies and Sue Power Shot

Tis the season for sniffles! We couldn’t resist a silly doe of veggie goodness after Janey’s ode to Sue. Warning: This may or may not be delicious based on your palette. Pick out a couple of veggie juices, mix them in the same glass, and down them as fast as you can. We’re sorry for the taste, but you’re welcome for the healthy boost.

Holiday Bites

Now that you’ve spent the last few days recovering from Thanksgiving dinner, allow us to offer you some festive finger foods that will fill you without stuffing you like a turkey.

Leftover Sliders: Purge those Thanksgiving leftovers from you fridge by making sliders from your leftover bread rolls, dressing, mashed potatoes, turkey, and cranberry sauce. Mix and match with whatever you’ve got!

Pull-andShare Puff Pastry Christmas Trees: All you need for this recipe is a can of pre-made puff pastry or croissant dough and either pesto for a savory dish or Nutella for a sweet dish.

Fruit Kabobs: Slice up your favorite fruits and thread them onto some bamboo skewers.  Drizzle them with honey, or white chocolate, and let them set in the fridge until your guests arrive.

Spiced Candied Pecans: No Season of Love party would be complete without Sue’s favorite holiday treat. This special recipe was inspired by our dear friend, Christi — her time-tested tip? Add ½ tsp of ground allspice and ½ tsp of ground cayenne!

If, however, you’ve reached your sugary limit for the week and need something a little salty and spicy in your life, then we highly recommend you try this Herbed Pecans recipe — but take it from us, use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar!

Bonus: Bag your spiced nuts in festive food wrapping and hand them out as holiday gifts!

 .

Season of Love Bingo Hold onto your reindeer — we’ve pulled together a fun Season of Love bingo game for you to print and play with up to 30 of your friends and family members this holiday — grandma will love it!

Many of the items on the bingo cards are classic holiday film tropes, while others are classic queer film tropes.  The items in quotes are things we hope you and your friends exclaim while you watch Season of Love.  Print off a variety of bingo cards, hand them out to your guests, and check each item off your bingo sheet as you watch.

Online Watch Party Bingo: Watching with your 10,000 bestest buddies online? We’ve got an online version of our Season of Love bingo cards as well, so play along wherever you’re at in the world! Be sure to let us know the moment you shout BINGO! And virtual players, don’t forget, everyone should have a different version of the bingo card — be sure to generate a new card at the top right corner of the virtual bingo card link!

As always, make sure your friends are safe to drive home after an evening of celebration, and if they aren’t, then follow Mardou’s example, and put them to bed with some water and Tylenol.
