Holiday rom-coms. It’s hard to avoid them this time of year with their cheery love stories, sprinkled with peppermint bark and lots of compulsory heterosexuality. Well, news broke yesterday that out actress Kristen Stewart is in talks to play the lead in a Christmas rom-com. I know, I had to read it twice myself.
According to Variety, Stewart is set to star in Clea DuVall’s upcoming Happiest Season. The film would feature Stewart as “a young woman whose plan to propose to her girlfriend while at her family’s annual holiday party is upended when she discovers her partner hasn’t yet come out to her conservative parents.”
DuVall has written the story along with Mary Holland, and DuVall will also direct. DuVall herself is an out actor but has turned to behind the scenes work in recent years. Kristen Stewart is known for her dramatic turns, but we know she has the skills for comedy, just look at her SNL performance.
This development is a big deal in terms of visibility in a genre that often overlooks that LGBTQ people exist at all. We had the lovely Lez Bomb this year, and a feature starring one of Hollywoods most sought-after actresses means we are making serious progress. We’ll keep you in the loop when new announcements are made.
