The cup has been won, girlfriends have been kissed, and ticker tape has fluttered down the Canyon of Heroes. After an exciting tournament, the USWNT has once again shown the world their tenacity and talent and everyone, even no-sports-minded folks like myself are looking for ways to carry on the spirit throughout the year. Here are a few leagues that feature women players (and quite a few lesbian, bi and queer players as well) that could use your energy and support throughout the year.
National Women’s Soccer League: More soccer! Those amazing players that won the World Cup? They all play for teams within this league. Want to see Megan Rapinoe strut her stuff? Check out The Seattle Reign. Want to see sweethearts Ashyn Harris and Ali Krieger play together? Check out the Orlando Pride. It even has Pride in the name! There are nine teams across the country and the league has struggled in the past, so help keep that momentum and support a team or two,
WNBA: Yes, baby, the Women’s National Basketball Association. I’m so bad with sports that I often refer to half-time as “intermission” but the WNBA has me hooked. You’ll find many out LBQ players on the league’s twelve teams, including Sue Bird (who is a hell of a writer, too), Seimone Augustus, and Diana Taurasi. The WNBA has gotten a lot of flack over the years, most of it sexist in nature, but if you want to see exceptional women play basketball, and get lost in the excitement, find and support your local team.
Women’s Football Alliance: Get ready to tailgate and support the over FIFTY teams in the alliance. Yes, this is American football, and you’ll see all the same things as with men’s football, including tackling and Hail Mary passes.
Women’s Flat Track Derby Association: If you haven’t been to a roller derby match, then you are missing out! This fast-paced, high energy sport is a heck of a lot of fun. There are Women’s Derby League around the world, and probably one not too far from you right now! The sport has always attracted queer women, and I can tell you at least five lesbians and bisexual women in media that also play derby. If that doesn’t convince you, how about player names like Ani DiSpanko, Killary Shank, and Dorian Slay?
These are just a few examples. There are teams for whatever sport you love, from hockey to fast-pitch softball to dodgeball. Find what suits you and send those players a little love.
