Five good (and gay) things that happened this week: 9/22-9/28

Happy Friday all! Is that a nip in the air? Here’s your first FG&G of the fall.

1. Rafiki wins its day in court! Congratulations to the folks involved with the lesbian film, Rafiki, who challenged a ban set by Kenya’s Film and Classification Board. Rafiki was ineligible for Oscar consideration because it was not shown in its home country of Kenya due to its lesbian theme. The film’s director Wanuri Kahiu filed a lawsuit and a judge temporarily lifted the ban on Rafiki so it would be eligible and it has been playing to sold out audiences ever since.

2. Keira Knightley is down for a queer sequel to Bend it Like Beckham. Knightley is on a press tour for her new (and very queer film) Colette, and was asked about her much beloved (and straightwashed) film, Bend it Like Beckham. Here was her response when asked about Jess and Jules by Pridesource.

PS: A lot of people in the LGBTQ community wanted Jess and Jules to be a couple in the end.

KK: Fuck yeah! That would’ve been amazing. I think they should’ve been too. I think that would’ve been great. We need a sequel.

3. Your Great British Bake Off girlfriends will be starring in a spy sitcom together. Out lesbian comedian and host Sue Perkins and her GBBO co-host Mel Giedroyc left the show last season when the show moved to Channel 4. But never fear! The two will be back in the comedy, Hitmen, as two assassins who struggle to do their jobs due to their incessant bickering.

4. Lena Waithe’s new show, Twenties, has cast its lead. The TBS show developed and written by Waithe has cast Jonica T. Gibbs as Hattie, a queer woman in her twenties. Alongside Hattie are her two best straight friends, Marie (Christina Elmore) and Nia (Gabrielle Graham), who join Hattie and try to navigate life and love in their twenties.

5. Sara Ramirez is down to return to Grey’s Anatomy. When Ramirez’s Callie left Grey’s Anatomy at the end of Season 10, fans’ hearts were broken. They were shattered again when Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) was written off the show last season. Thankfully, the show hinted at a reunion between Callie and Arizona but now that’s the stuff of fanfiction. Or is it? Sara Ramirez has stated her desire to return to the medical drama as a guest star when her Madam Secretary schedule permits. What could this mean?! Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
