Five good (and gay) things that happened this week: 6/23-6/29

Happy Friday! My apologies for not bringing you a G&G post last week, but I was on vacation, so I hope you will soon forgive me.

1. It’s confirmed: GLOW will have a lesbian romance! We’ve known that the popular 80’s wrestling show would be introducing a new lesbian character named Yolanda (Shakira Barrera), but we now know that she will have a connection with an existing cast member. (I’ll keep that part a secret, but if you want some major spoilers, you can find them here. ) GLOW S2 is available now on Netflix.

2. Queering webseries explores what it’s like when a parent unexpectedly comes out. In a new webseries that debuted this week, lesbian character Hannah finds out that after decades of marriage, her mother Val is leaving her father. Not only that, but Val has become a Youtube sensation for her late-in-life coming out video where she reveals she’s actually bisexual. The show has great acting, interesting and witty writing, and dropped five episodes at once. You can check it out here. Next week I’ll be doing a more in-depth look at the show.

3. If you had a crush on Miss Honey in Matilda, you aren’t alone. Actress Mara Wilson (who is an out bi woman) explains the appeal of the Matilda movie to the queer community.

4. Queer women of color give their younger selves advice in this wonderful and inspiring Cosmo UK piece. Cosmopolitan UK interviewed 10 women/womxn about what they would tell their younger selves and it might just bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye.

5. Marvel will be including at least two LGBTQ heroes in its universe. For fans of the Marvel movies, we already know that Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is bisexual, but there will be more according to Marvel Studios’s  Kevin Feige. Who those additional characters will be is still a mystery, so we’ll have to wait and see.
