Bella Books authors will be presenting on various topics at the Golden Crown Literary Society’s (GCLS) virtual conference, starting June 20th through July 11th.
For the first time in 16 years, GCLS had to cancel their in-person conference, which was slated to take place in Albuquerque, due to the pandemic. In its place, GCLS is offering their first ever virtual conference that takes place over the following four weekends. (Register here.) While the format will be different, participants can count on many familiar programs including master classes, panels, and the Goldie Awards Ceremony and celebration.
Ten Bella Books titles are finalists for a 2020 Goldie Award and five authors will appear at the virtual conference.
June 20th and 21st
The virtual conference opens on Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm ET with a panel titled “Persistence, Perseverance, Perspiration: How to Finish What You Start.” Alongside other panelists, Bella’s Jessie Chandler, Karin Kallmaker, and KG MacGregor share how they get their books over the finish line despite creative challenges and real-life crises.
Sunday’s programming includes three panels, two of which feature Bella authors. After 2:00pm’s “Sex, Lies, and Lesfic” panel, “Queer Books are Lit: a Millennial Perspective on Media,” a panel that will include our own Tagan Shepard will begin at 3:00pm ET. Shepard and the other panelists will discuss being millennial queers, the role of queer literature in the broader media landscape, and why they chose traditional publishing to tell queer stories. At 4:00pm ET, Bella’s Sheryl Wright will appear on the “Size Matters” panel where she and her fellow panelists will discuss the importance of plus-sized women protagonists, how to avoid stereotypes, and writing empowered characters of size.
On Friday, June 26 at 7:00pm ET, publisher and author Isabella will offer a Master Class on “Mapping Your Novel,” followed by a second Master Class on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00am ET. Taught by Radclyffe, “The Art of the Scene” will focus on the how-to’s of writing powerful scenes for plotters and pantsers alike.
On Sunday, June 28, there are two panels. “Making a Living from Writing” at 2:00pm ET will feature five authors talking about becoming full-time authors and living off of writing. “Invisible Disabilities in Lesfic” at 3:00pm ET will have five authors talking about navigating invisible disabilities in your fiction and creating realistic characters who cope with a larger society.
July 3rd and July 5th
On Friday, July 3rd at 7:00pm ET, Bella’s own Karin Kallmaker will appear on the “Laughing Our Way Through It” panel. Kallmaker and three others will discuss the indomitable spirit of romcoms and the role they have to play in making life more tolerable right now. The panelists will discuss how to balance sincere emotion with fun and why they love writing romantic comedies.
On Sunday, July 5th at 10:00am ET, “Chemistry 101,” a panel featuring Bella’s Jaime Clevenger and other best-selling romance authors, will focus on creating couples with sizzling chemistry—and the formulas they use to get things just right. This is the kind of chemistry class you won’t want to nap through.
July 10th and 11th
On Friday, July 10th at 7:00pm ET, “Creating our Culture” will take place. This panel is all about how writers form lesfic culture and what gaps still exist.
On Saturday, July 11th at 11:00am ET, Bella’s Jaime Clevenger will moderate “Kiss & Tell: Readers and Writers Discuss if Sex Matters.” Bella author Laina Villeneuve and other panelists will discuss the importance of sex scenes when it comes to character and relationship development. Readers and writers will be invited to chime in about the importance of sex scenes and why some forego them altogether.
And finally, at 4:00pm ET on Saturday, July 11th, the 2020 Goldie Awards will celebrate another year of outstanding Lesbian-themed literature.
