5 Good (and Gay) Things that Happened This Week: 11/24-12/1

It’s Friday and you know what that means…time for something good and gay to get you ready for the weekend.

1. Barbie comes out in support of marriage equality. She’s been a doctor, an astronaut, a rock star, and now Barbie’s an LGBTQ ally. This week on Barbie’s popular Instagram page, the blonde icon teamed up with best-selling author and fashion blogger, Aimee Song, to show her support for marriage equality. You can actually buy the shirt too!

2. Sundance will premiere two major new queer films. The famed film festival just announced its 2018 festival lineup, and two of the films will focus on lesbian and queer characters. The Miseducation of Cameron Post, based on the bestselling YA novel by Emily Danforth, is screenwritten and directed by the out Desiree Akhavan. It stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Cameron, a bright young lesbian who is sent to conversion therapy by her conservative aunt and grandmother. Lizzie is also getting a lot of buzz and stars Chloe Sevigny as the infamous Lizzie Borden, and Kristen Stewart as her faithful (and very close) housemaid, Bridget. Will this adaptation finally really examine Lizzie’s sexuality? Well, if the promo pic is any indication, uh, yeah.

3. The Butch Lesbians of the 20s 30s and 40s coloring book comes alive for the holidays. In a new video, the makers of said coloring book, which would make an excellent stocking stuffer, imagine a holiday potluck to end all potlucks. Hosted by Gertrude Stein and Alice. B. Toklas, this imaginary party features notable lesbians like Radclyffe Hall, Romaine Brooks, Ma Rainey and more, using art from the coloring book itself.

4. Elle Mills comes out as bi in a sweet and funny video. Hugely popular Youtuber Mills posted a video this week that already has over a million views. In it, she comes out to friends and family as bisexual. There are tears, hugs, laughter, and houses wrapped in rainbows. It will make you smile. Welcome to the family, Elle!

5. The L Word reboot gets a lesbian showrunner, may just happen after all. Ok, so technically this happened last week, but it was Thanksgiving and I was up to my elbows in visiting mothers and giblets. This is pretty big news for The L Word fans, and is a good indication that this reboot might actually happen. Out actress/director/writer Marja-Lewis Ryan has been tapped to showrun the reboot. You may already know Ryan from her film The Four Faced Liar, which she wrote and starred in. This is getting exciting!
